Recognizing the Signs

When Your Face Starts Looking Different Than You Feel

Facial aging can happen gradually. You may first notice it in a photo, on a video call, or when the jawline and cheeks no longer look as defined as they once did.

A thread lift may be worth considering if:

  • Your jawline has started to look softer or less defined
  • Early jowling has begun to develop
  • Your cheeks or mid face have started to descend
  • Nasolabial folds appear more noticeable
  • You want to lift and tighten tissue without undergoing traditional facial surgery
  • You want natural-looking improvement rather than a dramatic transformation

Candidacy

Is a Thread Lift Right for You?

You may be a candidate for PDO thread lifting if you are in good overall health and want to improve mild to moderate facial sagging without undergoing a more invasive surgical procedure.

A thread lift may be worth considering if you:

  • Have early facial or neck laxity
  • Are noticing jowling or reduced jawline definition
  • Want to reposition sagging cheek or mid face tissue
  • Prefer a minimally invasive treatment
  • Want improvement without the recovery associated with facial surgery
  • Understand that results are temporary and generally more subtle than surgical results

Another treatment may make more sense if you:

  • Have substantial excess or loose skin
  • Want a dramatic degree of facial lifting
  • Primarily have volume loss rather than tissue laxity
  • Are looking mainly to address dynamic wrinkles rather than sagging
  • Expect the results of a surgical facelift from a non-surgical treatment

You don't need to diagnose the problem yourself. Dr. Sand will evaluate your facial anatomy and discuss which approach is appropriate for the changes you want to address.

The Experience

What to Expect From Your Thread Lift

01

Consultation

Dr. Sand will evaluate your facial anatomy, the degree of laxity present, and the areas you would like to improve, then determine whether thread lifting is appropriate and develop a treatment plan.

02

Treatment

Thin PDO threads are inserted beneath the surface of the skin to support and lift targeted tissue. Numbing medication is used for comfort; treatment typically takes 30 minutes to one hour.

03

Results

An initial lifting effect may be visible immediately. Results continue to develop over the following weeks as swelling settles and collagen formation occurs.

04

Recovery

Thread lifts are performed on an outpatient basis with recovery typically much shorter than surgical rejuvenation. Dr. Sand provides individualized aftercare instructions.

Common Questions

Questions About PDO Thread Lifts

Does a thread lift hurt?

Numbing medication is used during treatment to help minimize discomfort. Some patients may experience temporary tenderness, pressure, tightness, or mild discomfort during the early recovery period.

Ask Dr. Sand About Comfort & Numbing →
Will I still look like myself?

That's the goal. Thread lifting is intended to reposition and support existing facial tissue rather than completely change your facial features. Results are generally more subtle than those achieved through surgical lifting.

See If Threads Match Your Goals →
How long do thread lift results last?

Results vary according to the type of threads used, treatment area, skin characteristics, degree of correction, and individual aging process. Sand Institute states that thread lift results may last approximately one to two years, although individual outcomes and longevity cannot be guaranteed.

Get Your Personalized Timeline →
Is there downtime?

Thread lifting requires substantially less recovery than surgical facial rejuvenation, but that doesn't mean nothing happens afterward. Temporary swelling, bruising, soreness, tightness, or skin irregularities may occur.

Ask About Recovery & Aftercare →
When will I see my results?

Some lifting may be visible immediately after treatment. The result typically becomes more apparent over the following two to three weeks and may continue to evolve as collagen formation occurs.

Plan Your Treatment Timeline →
Can a thread lift replace a facelift?

Not for everyone. Thread lifting is generally better suited to patients seeking a more modest degree of correction without surgery. Significant loose or excess skin may require a different approach to achieve the desired improvement. Your consultation is where that distinction should be made.

Experience Matters With Thread Lifting

Why Choose Dr. Nancy Sand for Your Thread Lift?

Thread placement requires a detailed understanding of facial anatomy, tissue movement, and aesthetic balance.

Nancy Sand, MD, founder of the Sand Institute and The Sand System, is an oculoplastic and cosmetic surgeon certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. She completed her residency training at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and the Doheny Eye Institute and has pursued additional aesthetic training nationally and internationally.

Her experience with thread lifting dates back to 2000, when she was among the early surgeons in Los Angeles using non-absorbable lifting threads. She has continued working with newer absorbable barbed-thread techniques for facial and body tissue repositioning, tightening, and biostimulation.
